The two sides had accused each other of trying to seize power at the beginning of the conflict in 15 April.
The cease-fire agreement raised hopes for a break from the war, which has displaced nearly 1.1 million people from their homes, including more than 250 Thousands fled to neighboring countries, threatening to destabilize an already troubled region.
Although fighting continued during previous periods of ceasefire, this is the first ceasefire that comes based on a formal agreement between the two sides after negotiations.
Shortly before the ceasefire took effect, the Rapid Support Forces broadcast an audio message from its commander, Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, in which he thanked Saudi Arabia and the United States, but urged his men to stand firm until victory or martyrdom. He said, “We will not back down unless we end this coup, prosecute all those who have committed crimes against the Sudanese people, and return to the democratic path.”
Volker Berthes, the UN envoy to Sudan, warned Monday of the increasing “ethnic character” of the military conflict and its potential repercussions on neighboring countries.
Perthes said in a briefing to the UN Security Council: “The growing ethnic nature of the conflict threatens to plunge the country into a long-term conflict and its repercussions to the region.”
